Overview

Overview

I was a UX Research Intern in Google NBU (Next Billion Users) in the summer of 2022. My project focused on conducting a full scale qualitative study on Google’s web stories. I was responsible for everything including planning the study, designing the interview guide, conducting user interviews, formulating insights and recommending design changes.

Final Deliverables

Final Deliverables

During my project, I planned my research, conducted desk research to formulate hypotheses and finally conducted 11 in-depth user interviews. By the end, I collated my secondary research into a narrative based document, and recommended design changes based on my final insights.

Next Billion Users (NBU Team)

Google NBU focuses their attention to people who are about to become internet users. It will be their first time on the Internet, so the interface and experience design has to be intentional in creating the online space understandable and easy to interact with. Google’s Web Stories are an example of one of the initiatives that converts long-form text content into visual short-form content, in localized languages that is easier to consume.

Learnings & Reflections

Learnings & Reflections

  • The follow-up questions can make or break your study. The pilot was instrumental in allowing me to reassess my probing questions and structure them more effectively.

  • Synthesis: Through the desk research, I learned the importance of narrative based writing. It made the document easier for other stakeholders to read, and fun to go through!

  • Gradual Prioritization: I planned to do 3 consecutive 90-minute user interviews everyday, including debriefing time. This was overwhelming and did not allow me enough time to debrief and prepare for the next. I learned to focus on the major research goals and stay relevant to the topic.
